Alexander Sigman

Alexander Sigman’s instrumental, electroacoustic, film, multimedia, and installation works have been featured at major international festivals, exhibitions, institutions, and venues. In June 2007, Sigman was Composer-in-Residence at the Musiques Démesurées festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Subsequently, he was awarded residency fellowships by the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart, Germany) the Djerassi Foundation, and the Paul Dresher Ensemble Artists Residency Center. In 2012-2013, he will be undertaking a musical research residency at IRCAM. Since 2008, Sigman has been Co-Editor of the Search Journal for New Music and Culture and Managing Director of Ensemble Modelo62. In 2010, he co-founded the Menlo-Atherton Academy of Contemporary Music, a San Francisco Bay Area arts education organization. Recently, Sigman has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Sacramento-based Composers and Schools in Concert (CSIC). Current projects include Minotaur, an intermedia performance installation for dance, video, live painting, and sound sculpture, realized in collaboration with choreographer Erika Tsimbrovsky, alarm/will/sound, a series of modified car alarm systems designed in conjunction with London and Berlin-based product designer Matthias Megyeri, and the soundtrack to an animated film by Korean visual artist Eunjung Hwang. This year, Sigman has received commissions from New York-based violinist/violist Miranda Cuckson, Italian flutist Matteo Cesari, Ensemble Pamplemousse, Ensemble Modelo62, and the LA Percussion Quartet. Sigman’s first portrait recording, entitled Nominal/Noumenal, was released on Carrier Records in March 2012. This recording will feature performances by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble SurPlus, and ensemble ascolta. Sigman completed his doctorate in Music Composition at Stanford University in 2010. Prior to Stanford, he obtained a BM in Music and a BA in Cognitive Sciences from Rice University. Further postgraduate studies were undertaken at the University for Music and the Performing Arts Vienna, as well as the Institute for Sonology of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands).
